Biosensor innovation reveals illegal growth hormones

The National Food Administration of Sweden has, together with researchers at SLU (the Swedish Agricultural University), developed a new method that makes it possible to reveal illegal hormones in a fast and secure manner. Growth hormones are forbidden within the EU.

The new test method is already in use at inspections during breeding animals, in slaughterhouses and in tests of imported meats.

The method use urine samples and sometimes also samples of blood and hair, or even meat.  A biosensor with antibodies from animals is tested against the substance that is to be analysed. If any growth hormone is present in the sample, it will be tied to the antibodies. The quantity of tied antibodies is measured with a specific detector and from that the hormone level in the sample is calculated.

The researcher behind the method is Annette Johansson at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala.
