Hamburger giant launches Swedish offensive

The Miami-based company recently started showing a profit in its Swedish business for the first time since 1991 and is now determined to cement its position on the country’s fast food market.

Stefan Eriksson, managing director for Burger King in Scandinavia, said: “Over the next few years we’re expecting to open ten restaurants a year in Scandinavia and the majority of these will be in Sweden.”

This represents a rapid acceleration of the company’s expansion and is likely lead to the creation of 1,200-1,500 new jobs.
In 2004 Burger King has opened three new restaurants in Sweden – in Trollhättan, Göteborg and Glumslöv in Skåne. A fourth is soon to open in Helsingborg.

Burger King has long been overshadowed in Sweden by its U.S. archrival McDonald’s. But while McDonald’s expansion has slowed lately, Burger King’s new offensive could double its number of Swedish outlets, which currently number 49, by 2010.
Burger King has Swedish sales of €55 million. Stefan Eriksson said he was aiming for this figure to reach €100 million within five to six years.
