German drugstore giant Schlecker invests in Denmark

The German drugstore chain Schlecker has opened 22 shops in Denmark in just 6 months. The expansion plan for Schlecker is to open at least 50 shops annually in Denmark with the aim being 400 - 500 shops in total.

Danish competitor Matas, which has 291 shops, says that it is prepared for the competition and ready to offer lower prices. Terje List, managing director of the Matas chain says that so far Matas is not under pressure on its important branded products.

Schlecker was founded in 1975 and employs around 50,300 people. With over 13,000 outlets, the chain is among the 25 largest retail enterprises in Europe, and the largest in the drugstore sector. In 2003, Schlecker generated revenues of USD 8.1 billion.
