Rosehip and probiotics, active ingredients in winning research poster

A young Swedish researcher, Åsa Håkansson from the University of Lund, won this year’s Medicon Valley Poster Award at the BioTech Forum Science Conference held in Copenhagen in October. Åsa Håkansson and her collaborators are working on an anti-inflammatory drink for use on patients in conjunction with surgery. Combining probiotics and rosehip, known for its high levels of antioxidants, post-surgery complications involving inflammations in the colon can be reduced.

The research is a cross-disciplinary project involving two research groups, one in surgery and one in food technology.
The research methods used are standard for the development of medical applications. Further studies will show if these results can lead to a new range of preventive therapies for patients that will undergo bowel surgery.
