Swedes taste second straight culinary gold

Sweden’s top chefs have won the gold medal at the 21st Culinary
Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, after defeating competition from 1,100
chefs in 36 countries.

The Swedish team, the reigning champions from 2000, competed in
disciplines ranging from making hors d’oeuvre to baking wedding cakes.

The teams did their cooking in glass-walled kitchens, closely watched
by an international jury which judged them on creativity, presentation
and – of course – how the food tasted.

The Swedes’ dishes included turbot pastrami, baked saddle of venison
and almond bavaroise. These and other delicacies were sampled by
spectators in an adjacent restaurant.

Founded in 1896, the year that marked the revival of the modern Olympic
Games, the Culinary Olympics is one of the world’s oldest and most
prestigious international cooking competitions.

Gert Klötzke, Swedish team manager, said: “We have an enormous interest
in food in Sweden. Our chefs are extremely talented and we have a team
that has worked for almost eight years together.”

The group had been practicing for the event for 18 months, he added.
Sweden’s closest rivals in the final standings were Switzerland, the
U.S., Canada and Scotland.
