Food companies support children in needThe leading Swedish bakeries Polarbröd and Skogaholms, together with the Swedish retailer ICA and the Swedish bread consumers, have raised close to USD 1 million for charity through sales of a special Christmas bread during December. Also holders of the ICA loyalty card have been able to contribute through direct payment. In total 950,000 bread loafs were sold in ICA stores all over Sweden. The outcome from the bread project is that SOS Children’s Villages will help to build homes and provide education for 90 homeless children in Latvia. “There are 3500 abandoned children in Latvia. This is just the beginning and the need for help is big”, says Elisabeth Andersson, secretary-general at SOS Children’s Villages. SOS Children’s Villages has so far built 450 child villages in 132 cities. Besides that, the organisation has started 1100 schools, hospitals and youth houses. All children, who get the chance to live in a SOS village, also get education or vocational education/training.
