PROBIOTICS PREVENT IRON DEFICIENCYThe Lund based biotech company Probi,s probiotics represent an important component for combating iron deficiency. Probi conducted a study that shows that the company’s Lp299v bacteria enhances the efficiency of the body’s capacity to absorb iron. The study comprised tests on 24 healthy women aged 21-29. For four days, the test group consumed drinks with or without the Lp299v bacteria. In the women who were given the Lp299v bacteria culture, after 18 days a strongly improved iron-absorption capacity was measured compared with the other women in the study.
The result shows that supplements of Probi’s probiotic Lp299v bacteria strongly improve the body’s iron absorption capacity.
Iron deficiency and low iron reserves in the body are a common medical complaint in the western world and developing countries. Young women, in particular, suffer from iron deficiency. The problem is not easily resolved by adopting an iron-rich diet. Since the body has difficulty absorbing iron, diet must also include something that enhances the efficiency of iron absorption.
“This strengthens Probi`s business position, particularly in the area of Functional Food,” says Per Bengtsson, CEO of Probi. “Achieving increased mineral absorption from foods is a medical benefit that can be easily communicated to a large customer group.”
The study was presented in conjunction with an international congress in Brussels at the end of August, which was arranged by The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN). The congress delegates mainly comprised physicians, dieticians and nutrition companies that are all working to improve the nutritional status of humans.
