Society cost for unhealthy eating habits: 233 USD per capitaAccording to the National Institute of Public Health, the Swedish society cost for unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity is 233 USD per person every year. The cost analysis has been performed in cooperation with authorities, experts, organisations, municipalities and county councils. The study can be seen as a reaction to a relatively new problem in Sweden, where many persons gain weight, exercise less and experience more health related problems.
According to the institute, the main cost driver is absence from work due to illness related to unhealthy eating. Another cost driver was the direct cost in hospitals. As a result of the report, The National Institute of Public Health calls for a major national investment in better eating habits and improved life style.
The institute claims that unhealthy eating combined with less physical exercise cause the society enormous costs. The food industry can contribute to better health by offering new products within the functional food concept.
