Great increase of ecological food consumption in SwedenAccording to Statistics Sweden, the consumption of ecological products is increasing rapidly. The total sales of ecological products in Sweden reached about 550 000 Million USD in 2005, it is a growth by 40 % since 2004. High quality products from ecological farmers are step by step reaching the conscious consumers.
The Swedish government has high ambitions for the Swedish Ecological production. The goal is that 20 % of the Swedish agriculture shall consist of ecological farming in 2010. The figures today show that the ecological segment represents 2,6 percent of the total Swedish food market. Still there is a lot of work to be done before the goal can be reached, but if we assume that the existing rapid growth of 40 % per year continues, the ecological market share would represent around 10 percent of the total Swedish food market in 2010.
The other part of the Öresund region, Denmark, also experiences an increased consumption of ecological products. The sales have gone up by 12 percent since last year. One of the reasons why Denmark is behind Sweden is the lack of ecological producers, especially in the meat production area. However there is a positive development in Denmark as well, the big chains of stores has realised that the consumers care for health and quality aspects in larger scale. Therefore, the stores are offering more ecological products. This will hopefully encourage more farmers to produce ecologically in Denmark.
