New gene behind obesity discoveredA couple days ago, new research results based on results from 120000 DNA tests proves a correlation between obesity and the presence of a modified gene, MC4R. The persons with this gene modification weights about two kilos more than the persons without a gene modification. The modified MC4R gene also causes a much higher risk of suffering from diabetes. Researchers still believe that environmental factors affect obesity problems but researchers have also sought for explanations in genetics. Earlier, researchers found a correlation between the presence of an FTO gene and obesity, now they have also discovered the MC4R gene and its correlation to obesity. “We have known that an unusual variant of MC4R is connected to a severe and hereditary obesity disease in some families, by studying our new material we have discovered a more common change that affect persons in larger population groups”, says Professor Leif Groop, leading diabetes researcher at Malmö University Hospital. About half of the Europeans are expected to suffer from the MC4R modified gene. The modified genes affect people’s appetite and energy use. FTO is a gene on human chromosome 16 in which certain variants appear to be correlated with obesity in humans. Heterozygous mutations in the coding sequence of the serpentine melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) is the most frequent genetic cause of severe human obesity.
